Storing Lyophilized Peptides: Cold Chain and Reconstitution Basics

Lyophilized peptides are stable, but not indestructible. A short primer on temperature, light, and reconstitution for research handling.

Lyophilization (freeze-drying) removes water so a peptide can sit stable for long periods. That stability is real, but it depends on how the vial is stored before and after it is opened.

Before reconstitution

Sealed, lyophilized material is generally stored cold — commonly at −20 °C for long-term holding — and kept away from moisture and light. Let a vial reach room temperature before opening so condensation does not settle on the powder.

After reconstitution

Once a peptide is in solution, its clock speeds up. Stability now depends on solvent, concentration, pH, and temperature. Solutions are usually held refrigerated (2–8 °C), protected from light, and used within a documented window rather than stored indefinitely.

Practical handling notes

  • Aliquot to avoid repeated freeze–thaw cycles.
  • Record the reconstitution solvent and date on the vial.
  • Some complexes, such as copper peptides, are naturally coloured — that is the chemistry, not a defect.
